Florida and West Coast All-Stars Play The Blues - World Premiere
Doug Deming‘s Blues All-Stars USA)
feat. Junior Watson, Terry Hanck & Sax Gordon
Doug Deming (born 1970) knows every blues fan in Florida. The Detroit native, who has been living in Florida for years, is a great guitarist and composer as well as a dynamic singer and band leader. He is also one of the nicest people you can imagine.
While Doug flies a bit under the radar of many blues fans worldwide, this is completely unjustified. We have seen him perform in Florida countless times, sometimes three or four times in a very short interval – and it was always great!
At the age of 16, he took a guitar in his hands for the first time and tried blues standards. In the same year, he saw Bobby Bland, B.B. King and Albert King performed and he was hooked. Since then he has been inextricably linked to the jump blues.
At the beginning of the 90s, he started to make semi-professional music, playing in local clubs in Detroit. In 1991, he founded his band the Jewel Tones, who quickly became known outside of Detroit. Many blues stars at the time let themselves be accompanied by the Jewel Tones when they performed in the city.
In 2002, Doug released his first album “Double Down”, which was followed by “Falling Through the Cracks” with Kim Wilson as a guest singer and harmonica player. Betty LaVette and the harmonica player Dennis Gruenling were also guests, with Dennis later becoming a member of the Jewel Tones.
Today, Dennis is a permanent member of Nick Moss' band, who is a regular guest at Groove Now, and one of the best harmonica players in the world. The Jewel Tones also accompanied Dennis on his own recordings.
In time, Doug and his wife Claudia traded Detroit for Florida, settling on the west coast of the Sunshine State, where he is able to satisfy his passion for fishing. Whenever Doug has a few days off, he goes out to sea to fish. As a certified captain, he also offers his services to guests who come to Florida and need a professional captain.
In 2012, Doug released “What’s It Gonna Take” – the album remained in the top 10 of the Living Blues Charts for many months. In 2013, he was selected for the Sean Costello Rising Star Award by Blues Blast Magazine. “Ready or Not”, which followed in 2016, was a new collaboration with Dennis Gruenling.
In 2018, Doug released his best album to date –“Complicated Mess”. The album features ten of Doug's own compositions, some of which have the makings of a hit. The album - with numerous well-known guests - reached the top three position in the Billboard Blues Albums Charts. The following year the band was nominated as 'Blues Band of the Year' by Blues Blast Magazine. The album is considered one of the best recordings of the year.
The Jewel Tones are one of the most experienced and solid bands in the international blues world. They embody a vintage sound that inspires today's blues fans. Doug’s guitar playing is also reminiscent of jazz greats like Charlie Christian or blues greats like T-Bone Walker. His taste in music, tone, timing and phrasing are exceptional.
Groove Now and Doug agreed that they wanted to do something new – a blues project that is based on the past and at the same time captures the current zeitgeist in the blues. The result is a band that includes great musicians with a strong focus on brass, including the two on winds, Sax Gordon and the multiple Blues Music Award winner Terry Hanck, who is also a great singer and composer.
Together on stage they will be joined by one of the best blues guitarists in the world – the former Canned Heat and West Coast legend Junior Watson – and Doug's usual rhythm section, who will provide the foundation.
