The Best Traditional Blues Band In The World With A Special Line-Up
Sugar Ray Norcia & The Bluestones feat. Duke Robillard & Greg Piccolo (USA)
There is probably no band that plays the traditional blues better than Sugar Ray Norcia & The Bluetones. At most, Kim Wilson delivers comparable quality with his traditional project. Sugar Ray is a perennial favorite at the US Blues Music Awards. For his album “Living Tear To Tear”, he received seven nominations! "One of the best new albums in any genre that I have heard in this past year…," was how it was described by the trade magazine "Blues Blast" at the time of its release, "a must-buy if you like classic harmonica-soaked Midwestern blues". More albums have since followed.
Sugar Ray Norcia has become world-famous as a singer and harmonica player in the band "Roomful of Blues". Raymond Alan Norcia, who comes from Rhode Island on the east coast of the US, has been on the road with his band, the Bluetones, since 1997.
Sugar Ray Norcia first played in Basel in 2013, returning four years later to play once again on the Groove Now stage. The line-up of the Bluetones has changed over the years. A few years ago, Monster Mike Welsh, an outstanding guitarist, was at Sugar Ray's side. This was followed by the two world-class guitarists, Duke Robillard and Little Charlie Baty – Little Charlie, who played in the West Coast project in Basel specially conceived by Groove Now in 2018, sadly passed away in 2020. Since then, the band has grown a bit more guitar-heavy, and for the last few years has been playing without Anthony Geraci, the legendary pianist and keyboard player who had been a long-term member of the band.
From time to time, Sugar Ray Norcia also played with the legendary saxophonist Greg Piccolo in the band “Roomful of Blues” – a band founded in 1967 by Duke Robillard. Greg is also a great singer. The band continues to be very popular today, despite numerous changes in its members. When Duke Robillard left the band to join the Fabulous Thunderbirds, he was replaced by none other than Ronnie Earl. We absolutely wanted Greg Piccolo for the Basel concert. Said and done! Thus three members of “Roomful of Blues” at that time will come together again on the Groove Now stage in Basel.
Sugar Ray Norcia & The Bluetones: The great, timeless blues tradition will be grippingly celebrated by its best contemporary performers!
