Anson Funderburgh is a living legend. Born in Plano, Texas, he started playing music professionally at the tender age of 15. He has now been one of the most important representatives of Texas blues for 50 years. Alongside Jimmie Vaughan, he is widely recognized as the best guitarist in Texas blues and even blues in general. Numerous musicians like Delbert McClinton are great admirers of this exceptional person and musician. His band - the Rockets - has been a fixture in Texas blues for decades. Anson has published or played countless recordings under his own name and as a guest musician for all of the most important blues musicians. Anson is in high demand not only as a musician, but also as a producer. His guitar playing is extremely tasteful, preferring to play one note less than one too many. He is one of the musicians that you can listen to for hours and hope that he will just keep playing.
Mike Morgan, born in Dallas in 1959, has also been active as a musician for many years. In his early youth, singers like Otis Redding or Wilson Picket motivated him to become a musician. As with many other guitarists, Stevie Ray Vaughan had a huge impact on Mike. After hearing his “Texas Flood” album in 1985, his decision was clear – he put music on the menu. He released some great CDs with his band “The Crawl” and became a big name in Texas blues. In his own band, he often plays as a trio with Kevin Schermerhorn on drums and Drew Allain on bass. These two will also accompany the three astounding guitarists in Basel.
Shawn Pittman is the youngest of the three guitarists. Originally from Oklahoma, he lived in Dallas for seven years and in Austin for fourteen. Six years ago, he returned to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Shawn is also a great singer and composer. He rather embodies the raw side of Texas blues. He plays with the great Moeller twins every now and again and has recently released a great CD with Jason Moeller. He can proudly look back on more than ten records released under his own name.
All three – Anson, Mike and Shawn – have each already played at Groove Now, but never together. With the recently conceived project – “Texas Blues Guitar Summit”– the three will be coming to Switzerland together for the first time to play exclusively at Groove Now.
The project is, not only for guitarists but for all blues fans, an absolute highlight that should not be missed.
